Down and Francis were contacted for advice
for the structural steel work installation for TUI
Luton - a major building refurbishment.
The problem was to build a pre-curved
structural steelwork Atrium above an existing
and occupied building. The building height was
also to be increased during an extensive
refurbishment.
The first issue was the removal of 60 No-
1970’s decorative fascias from the exterior of
the building. Some of the fascias weighed 8
tonnes. They
had to be safely removed during
on ongoing program.
A simple and
safe procedure was
recommended by our experienced sites
manager
which saved the
client much time and
money keeping the program on what was a
very tight schedule.

The pre-curved structural sections were
manufactured to fine tolerances to ensure that
the glazing fitted perfectly. This was sent to site
managed by a direct Down and Francis team.
The complex installation was finished on time
despite considerable site restrictions, and
problems from other trades.
Down and Francis then manufactured, fitted
and finished a considerable quantity of stainless
steel and glass balustrade.
To complete the project, structural bridges,
walkways and a mezzanine floor were added to
the Atrium.
Our teams worked seven days a week and
out of hours to ensure that a difficult and
complex program was met. |
